Celebrating South Africa’s Hiking Heritage – 5 of South Africa’s Most Epic Hikes

However, our heritage lies not only in our country’s people but also in our versatile and beautiful landscapes. So, this year, the Trail Food Co. would like to do something a little different and showcase some of the glorious South African hikes we have inherited! These hikes epitomise the diversity of our country’s geography and allow us to reconnect with where we come from.

The Otter Trail

Possibly South Africa’s Most Famous Hiking Trail

Chances are you’ve heard of the Otter Trail before. And for a good reason! This absolutely epic hike is just the right amount of a challenge and promises a wild adventure. The spectacular views along this 5-day coastal hiking trail will leave you in awe.

The trail runs between the scenic Storms River Mouth and Nature’s Valley, with plenty of beaches, wildlife, and fynbos to enjoy along your route. There are opportunities to swim in natural pools, and you can enjoy lunch or a snack with the Indian Ocean performing right in front of you!

The Fanie Botha

One of South Africa’s Oldest Hiking Trails

Are you looking to get lost in the right direction? Then head out to the Fanie Botha Hiking Trail, which many hikers call the perfect hiking destination.

The trail lies hidden among the striking mossy green plantations of the Sabie area in Mpumalanga. The Fanie Botha trail was one of the first hiking routes officially established in South Africa and catapulted the start of the country’s organised hiking culture.

Hikers walk along the scenic Drakensberg escarpment between Sabie and Graskop, where they get spoilt with panoramic views and crystal-clear waterfalls. Some of the landmarks to look forward to are Mac Mac Falls and Lone Creek Falls.

Rim of Africa

One of the Toughest (If Not the Toughest) Hikes in South Africa

This extreme hike only takes place once per year due to the sheer amount of planning involved in organising the longest guided hike in South Africa. The Rim of Africa Trust obtains permits from more than 200 nature reserves and landowners in the region to make this iconic hike possible.

The traverse explores a mountain passage in the heart of the Cape Floristic Region, which is one of only six floral kingdoms around the globe. Hikers move through a series of linked mountain traverses. While there are areas of path-hiking, hikers should have technical skills when the route goes off-path on mountainous terrain.

The Whale Trail

Hike Along One of the Best Land-Based Whale-Watching Coastlines in the World

If you’re looking for a hiking trail that doesn’t demand glutes of steel and offers a beautiful show of nature, the De Hoop Whale Trail has to be on your list!

This coastal hiking trail meanders through the De Hoop Nature Reserve in the Western Cape. Hikers can look forward to incredible whale watching opportunities, spectacular views, and a cascading kaleidoscope of delicate and rare fynbos.

Primitive Trails

The Actually Not-So-New, New Kid on the Block

If you feel like you’re in need of a digital detox, go on a primitive trail! These raw trails allow you to switch off while reconnecting with nature.

Primitive trails guarantee an authentic experience in the outdoors, where you will get to sleep under the stars and find joy in the beauty of the natural landscape. So, if you want to escape the rat race and need time to regroup and recharge, these trails are absolutely something you should consider.

Final Thoughts

There you have it! These are just a few of our country’s most beautiful hikes that we get to explore. Even better, we get to call them South African hikes!

We hope you feel inspired to plan to go on one of these trails, or if you’ve already been on one (or more) of these hikes, let us know!
