“Into the forest I go….”
If these words by conservationist John Muir speak to you, the Queen Rose hiking trail is just the place to “lose your mind and find your soul.”
Nestled within the Nelshoogte Forest Reserve, this trail’s landscapes will leave you in awe, whether you’re on a day hike or on a five-day overnight hike. The trail leads you through mountain passes, forests, and plantations located along the Makhonjwa Mountains in Mpumalanga. These mountains are a significant part of the Barberton Greenstone Belt, which is one of the oldest and best-preserved geological sites in the world.
The hike boasts various river crossings, beautifully scenic views, whimsical walks through forests, and endless opportunities for a hiking group to have the time of their lives.
You can also choose between backpacking or slackpacking on the hike. Regardless of which option you choose, the Trail Food Co. has got you covered for all your hiking meal needs on the Queen Rose, whether you’re looking for gourmet multi-day packs, lightweight packs, or yummy hiking snacks.
What makes this hike such a hit is that it’s accessible to hikers of varying reasonable fitness levels, and it offers a slackpacking option. So, if you’re looking for a first-time trail or one that will allow the entire family to participate, this is it.

The Ultimate Guide to Hiking the Queen Rose
WHY SHOULD YOU CHOOSE THE QUEEN ROSE TRAIL?
If you’re looking for a hike that’s conveniently close, consider this one. It’s about 5 hours from Polokwane and Tzaneen, 4 hours from Johannesburg, and only an hour from Mbombela (Nelspruit).
The Queen Rose hiking trail is not just breathtakingly beautiful with various rivers and waterfalls (such as Alvin Falls with a big pool to swim in), but it’s also really well organised by its friendly owners. All the trails are safe and well-marked.
The trail provides great birding opportunities with more than 350 different species to find and admire. There is also a Crowned Eagle nest on the Matumi Trail, and various rare species have been spotted on the trail, such as the African Finfoot.
It’s also really impressive to know that you’re traversing a geological area that has undergone intense study over a century. Researchers say the outcrops in the area contain key insights into the formation of the Earth’s continents, what the surface conditions may have been more than 3 billion years ago, and what the environment looked like when unicellular life appeared on the planet for the first time.
If you have kids, this trail is ideal if you consider one of the shorter trails or do a circular route.
THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR ON THE QUEEN ROSE
The Queen Rose has a bunch of things to look forward to. Here are some of the highlights for most hikers:
- Birds, such as the iridescent Narina Trogon
- A Crowned Eagle nest
- A Royal Swazi gravesite
- Cupid Falls
- A stunning indigenous riverine forest
- The Montrose river (which is clean enough to drink from).

WHEN TO HIKE THE QUEEN ROSE TRAIL
The best time to hike the Queen Rose is usually from April to October if you want the best temperatures and low rainfall.
Hikers tend to prefer the trail during the dry season, as the steep downhill and uphill could be pretty hectic when wet and slippery. The Montrose and Queens Rivers can also flood if there is a lot of rain in the area.
ABOUT THE QUEEN ROSE
Here’s all the essential information you need to know before setting out on the Queen Rose hike.
The Queen Rose hike offers a variety of routes and options, so hikers can tailor their route and decide how many days and nights they want to be on the trail.
You can also decide whether you want to do some circular routes or day hikes.
The hike isn’t too tricky and rates as medium-difficulty. Two marginally challenging parts would be Roland’s Staircase (which is a steep downhill) and the ascent past Cupid’s Falls.
A reasonable level of fitness is required, particularly for the steep downhill of Roland’s Staircase. This part is super steep – about 900 steps down to the Montrose River.
If you plan your route to avoid Roland’s Staircase, a medium fitness level would be fine.
There is no age limit on the Queen Rose trail. They’ve had both a 5-year-old and an 82-year-old on the trail before.
Hikers can decide if they would like to self-carry or make use of the slackpacking option.
Slackpacking will cost R120 per person, with a limit of one bag per person and one cooler box per group. For groups larger than 10, they will allow a second cooler box.
Hikers can pay for the slackpacking option with the Caretaker in cash when they arrive at Queens. The cost of slackpacking is the same whether you are hiking for 1 night or 3 nights.

The Queens River Base Camp, Matumi Lane Bush Camp, and Nelshoogte all have drinkable tap water. The water from the Montrose River is safe to drink.
If you want to drink water from the Queens River, you should take water purifying drops or a water filter. Try and fill up your water bladders or water bottles before hiking the Matumi portion of the trail at the boom gate.
The facilities available are listed under the “Accommodation” section.
To help hikers feel safe on the Queen Rose, all hikers get issued with a two-way radio that base camp and vehicles roaming around the area monitor continuously.
In the event of any medical issues while on the trail, a vehicle will be dispatched to pick you up. If necessary, the organisers have a stretcher to assist you in getting out of the bush. Should a hiker feel too challenged by the trail or incapable of finishing the trail, the organisers can send a vehicle to collect you for a minimal fee.
All hikers get briefed about the trail and points of interest prior to starting the hike, as well as possible dangers they might face on the trail and how to use the two-way radio.
